Allowing the Time

On a damp early morning, I was walking toward the house when my attention turned toward the peonies. I write the word and can hear my mother's voice saying it. Peony. It's odd how I miss her talking about her flowers, because when she was here...well, I'll admit, I wasn't as interested as she was. She was a 'flower' girl. And to think back at that love that she had for God's earth, really blesses my heart.

I had a lot to do that morning, but they demanded my attention for a second of time. I walked over to them, pulled one gently upward into the palm of my hand; I closed my eyes, exhaled and brought myself closer. Inhale. Oh, the fragrance of them. Allowing myself that second to be refreshed by something so simple, so natural, did more for me than anything I could have made happen on my own.

God is like that.

Today, I did something of the same but nearly different. Walking out of the house, all of the glittery droplets were shimmering in my view. I vowed to myself upon coming home that I would allow the time. I came in, grabbed my Canon and set out to visit the dampened world outside. With each droplet, I'd scan another and another, until I found a few little friends within the green.

This is the world that my God made, that our God made. The pure one. The one that says, welcome, rest awhile, enjoy what I've given you. Take pleasure in what you see. Take care of it. And, still, there is So Much More.

When we allow ourselves the time to sit still, God will open our eyes...the ones on our face and the inner sight, to see His world and truly appreciate it for what it is. The hard part is realizing that we do not have to live by the clock every moment of every day. We don't.

And, here I am with a full schedule but the ability to say this and know in my heart...it is true. Step back, away from your clock, at least once a day and allow the time to connect with Him. You are sure to be refreshed.

  1. Amen. A good word...

(Though I think we approach our gardens a bit differently. I've been killing slugs left and right so that I don't have to see those snails. The grasshopper is pretty cute and do little.)

  2. Oddly I was out for lunch at a place with wonderful gardens and lots and lots of peonies but not a single bud open.

  3. What a beautiful post...and beautiful thought. Our daily lives are such a rush that we often do not take the time to "stop and smell the roses."
Thank you for a lovely way to begin the day!
